In further news, the Micra’s battery is charged and replaced. Even more excitingly, it starts. Nissan’s anti theft system has the nasty habit of forgetting that the car’s keys are actually belong to it if you disconnect the battery.
Meanwhile I’m waiting for a replacement for the notorious hatch switch, which should look like this:
Finally, let’s take a moment to admire what the battery sits on. Not a pressed steel tray which rusts through but a fancy alloy casting:

The hatch on my poverty-spec Accent laughs at your Micra’s fancy electronic hatch switch! My hatch handle actuates a bunch of metal rods, so it’s proven fairly reliable thus far :P
The handle itself...well, it’s fine, but they have a tendency to have their bracket rust, so....we’ll see if the handle fails at some point...

Previous Micras had something called a “key” which you just put in and turned. They also had (or hadn’t, depending on Nissan’s mood at the time) an internal release with a handle and a cable. Then they went all fancy.

My Accent has one of those ‘key’ things as well! Such a weird technology....in practice, you have to insert it into a specially designed hole on the trunk lid, and THEN turn it clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on your intent to lock or unlock the car! SOOOO primitive, right?
No internal release handle though! Just one for the little gas door! :P
